What is a local IP address?

A local IP address is an IP address within a private or local network.  This is a device's address when communicating with other devices within your network.

Most routers/gateways will automatically provide an IP address to devices that connect to it using a built-in DHCP server.  The IP address range varies based on how the DHCP server in the router is configured.

There are 3 ranges of IP addresses reserved for private networks:
  • 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
  • 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
  • 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

If a device has an IP address outside these ranges, it is on a public IP address.  Typically this indicates the device is connected to a modem, not a router or gateway.  For security and to prevent dropped calls, phones should always be connected to a router or gateway and use a private IP address
